Romance runs deep through the history of Wivenhoe House
200 years ago, landscape artist John Constable immortalised Wivenhoe House on canvas in his painting “Wivenhoe Park,”
Constable’s breathtaking creation was a true labour of love. Paid 100 guineas by Major-General Francis Rebow, then owner of Wivenhoe House for the painting, he used the money to prove his financial stability to the family of Maria Bicknell, the love of his life. He left Wivenhoe House on 19 September, marrying Maria on 2 October.
You can still tread in Constable’s footsteps today and admire the lake and landscape, very much as he saw them in 1816 on your own romantic escape.
