We are delighted to announced that acclaimed contemporary artist Kate Bright has been chosen to complete Wivenhoe House hotel’s landscape commission, celebrating 200 years since John Constable painted Wivenhoe Park.

Nearly 40 professional artists from the UK and Europe applied for the post, Kate, who grew up in Suffolk, will respond to the original masterpiece with a contemporary landscape painting, to be completed for the anniversary in September.

You can meet Kate at our Constable Challenge day on Sunday 12 June when amateur artists, young and old,  are invited to set up around the grounds of Wivenhoe House and create their own masterpieces for an autumn exhibition at the hotel when Kate’s painting will be unveiled.

The judging panel made up of Oliver Brown, General manager of the hotel, artist David Trenow and University of Essex Arts and Gallery Director, Jess Twyman, spent many hours going through the proposals. They were full of praise for the range and standard of the entries. Oliver said: “We knew we were looking for an artist who could create a fitting tribute to the original painting and we are confident that Kate’s work will be a suitable legacy.”

Wivenhoe House’s renowned sommelier, Lionel Lachasseigne, will teach you all you need to know about Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at our next wine dinner.

This fantastic event will take place in the wonderful Signatures restaurant. Less than 10 tickets are now available so be sure to get yours before the event sells out.

Five course dinner with wine £65 per person

If you are visiting Wivenhoe House in the next month it’s worth a slight detour to visit the fantastic ‘Celebrate Landscape’ open exhibition at the University of Essex’s Art Exchange gallery, just five minutes’ walk away.  The stunning exhibition features the work of more than 100 amateur artists of all ages ,  who were selected from hundreds of entries.  Winners of the various categories will be announced at the end of the month and all visitors can vote for ‘The People’s Prize’.   In May a selection of the entries will move to be displayed in the hotel  as part of our Constable celebrations.
