Wivenhoe House Hotel signs the Armed Forces Covenant. By signing the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Wivenhoe House Hotel in Colchester, General Manager Oliver Brown made public the company’s commitment to Defence personnel.
Since its inception in 2013, the #ArmedForcesCovenant has been helping to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for reservists, veterans and their families when accessing goods and services.
The hotel has started with a standard pledge detailing how the company can support Defence personnel as an employer and as a potential employer. The hotel is also offering a 10% discount on food in the brasserie and overnight accommodation for military personnel*. In time, the management team will tailor the pledge to better reflect the measures they are able to put in place to support Defence people.
This could take the shape of sponsoring servicemen looking to resettle or helping them move into second careers after retiring from the Armed Forces by gaining a degree in hotel management through the Edge Hotel School, based at Wivenhoe House. The hotel will also explore options for free recruiting services via the CTP and other local military networks (Leavers’ Link).
The hotel has a rich military history; the Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment, formed in 1941, were headquartered at Wivenhoe House during WW2. The SAS Association held an anniversary there in the 90s. In 2016 the hotel hosted their first SAS dinner at which Gerry Hill talked about his experiences in the SAS. The event was a sell out and the hotel is looking to hold another event in the future.
“With the military history of the house, it’s a very natural partnership.“ said General Manager Oliver Brown. ”We are proud of our close links with community groups in Colchester and the Garrison is one of the key partners.”
The company does not employ a reservist, veteran or service spouse at the present time, but that doesn’t matter, because businesses can publicly declare their support for Armed Forces personnel regardless of whether they currently employ a member of the Armed Forces community.
Wivenhoe House Hotel now joins over 100 businesses and organisations in the East of England that have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. The company’s pledge will be submitted to the Ministry of Defence and will be publicly available to download from www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk
With so many businesses and organisations publicly declaring their support to Defence personnel, it’s easier than ever to show staff, customers and the community the positive steps people make within a business to support Defence personnel.
East Anglia RFCA works with businesses on behalf of the Ministry of Defence to support and advise employers on Defence-related business initiatives. Our region covers Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk.
