National Theatre Live

Love Theatre? Love Wivenhoe House as the Lakeside Theatre, just five minutes’ walk away, will be showing live National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company productions from November.

Some of the best productions from the best theatre venues in the country will be projected live into the theatre, starting at 7.30 pm, giving you enough time to enjoy dinner in the brasserie before a short walk to your comfy seat.

You can enjoy these shows for just £13 or £10 a ticket for students/concessions.

The first screenings feature the most acclaimed playwrights in modern history: Terence Rattigan, Bertolt Brecht, Harold Pinter, George Bernard Shaw and Henrik Ibsen. The series launches on 3 November with NT Encore’s The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Rattigan, starring Helen McRory, followed on 1 December with The Threepenny Opera by Bertold Brecht, starring Rory Kinnear.

The theatre season will begin again early in 2017 with RSC Live’s  The Tempest, starring Simon Russell Beale on 11 January, swiftly followed on 12 January with NT Encore’s No Man’s Land by Harold Pinter, starring Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart.

Lusian Msamati stars in Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus in NT Live’s performance on 2 February and on 16 February NT Live offers you Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw, starting Gemma Arterton. On March 9 Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler comes to the screen, starring Ruth Wilson.

By car:

Whether approaching Wivenhoe House from London and the South or Ipswich and the North via the A12, take the exit marked Colchester (A133). Follow the A133 towards Clacton, ignore the entrance to the Knowledge Gateway, continue along the A133 then take the B1028 for Wivenhoe before turning right into Boundary Road, then right again into Park Road. The entrance for Wivenhoe House is shared with the University of Essex but Park Road leads you through Wivenhoe Park and you will be able to see the glorious house from the road.

For Sat Nav please use CO7 9HT and then follow signage to Wivenhoe House. Please note, some Sat Navs may direct you to the wrong side of Wivenhoe Park so please check our PDF Map

By train:

Colchester station, Colchester Town station, Wivenhoe station and Hythe stations are all between 10-15 minutes from Wivenhoe House by car. Trains run between London (Liverpool Street) and Colchester station every 10-20 minutes. The journey takes around an hour. Also connect with Colchester from Norwich, Ipswich, Felixstowe & Harwich. Some trains from London (Liverpool Street) also stop at Wivenhoe Station. When travelling from the Clacton/Walton direction, alight at Wivenhoe or Hythe Stations.


By plane:

Stansted airport is approximately 45 minutes from Wivenhoe House by car. Helicopter pad coordinates are 603200/223900.
